The 777 is a very well balanced carve ski. It has a big sweet spot, great edge grip, and plenty of rebound. The “Triple 7” is a great ski for carving up the groomed, but plenty versatile enough for bumps and crud. It compares very favorably to some other better known skis in this category.

The metal topped “Triple Eight” is a true Mammoth cult ski. Many locals choose it as an everyday ski due to its versatility. With its aluminum topped titanium reinforced construction and midfat shape, the 888 does just about everything well. The “Trip 8” has a thin tip profile that really slices through the snow, enhancing its already smooth crud performance. It is also surprisingly light and easy to ski for a ski with this much metal. Weather you’re ripping the windbuff up top, or maching down a frozen groomer, the 888 will make you feel like a hero.

The Crossfire is a bit of a rebel in the Apache line. It uses metal laminate construction, like the Recon and Xplorer, but features ABS sidewalls like the Factory team skis. This blend of metal and sidewall gives the Crossfire much more rebound and precision than the rest of the Apache line. It’s also a pretty versatile ski thanks to a wider (74mm) waist for this season. It is our favorite Apache, especially on firm snow, and in the bumps

We love the Recon for its combination of forgiveness and performance. At first it feels like a mild mannered cruiser, but when you get it up on edge it really comes to life. The Recon is an energetic yet smooth carver with a huge sweet spot, and plenty of grip. The Recon is a good bump ski, and maybe the best soft snow ski under 80mm wide at the waist. If you like the Recon but want a more versatile ski for crud and power, check out the Xplorer. It uses the same construction, but is 6mm wider, and has a bit less shape in the tail. This makes the Xplorer very versatile off piste, but still quite adept at carving the groomed. For good skiers who spend as much time off piste as on, the Xplorer comes about as close as you can get to a one ski quiver.

We really like the new K2 Backside skis. These skis are all about off piste adventures and out of bounds ripping. The Backlash is 92mm wide underfoot, and has a metal laminate construction. It is also the widest ski in the line without rocker. This makes the Backlash a great ski for expert resort skiers who spend lots of time in challenging terrain, and natural snow conditions, but also demand stability at speed on hard snow. If you spend lots of time on Chair 22 and up Top, the Backlash may be the only ski you need.
