It was a wild Independence Day on Mammoth Mountain. The crowds were thick, and some runs very thin and narrow. But, everyone was having a great time, and I did not see any collisions or wrecks. Monday was much better with smaller crowds, and some of the best spring skiing I can remember on Climax and Cornice. The usually mundane and groomed Cornice was filled with beautiful big round slush bumps. I wish they would leave it ungroomed all season long. Climax was really sweet with long easy bumps up top, followed by one of the best mogul fields I have ever skied taking you back to Saddle Bowl. With turns like these, I can't wait for next season.
Anyway, thanks for reading my winter blog, and thanks to everyone I got to ski with this season: Cara, Stacy C, Drew S, Preston M, Brian A, Scott K, Lloyd, ET, Heidi M, Treat, Bryan, Tim V, Simon G, Victor, Amy S, Jan, Bec, Shin, Pat W, Jessie W, Trevor W, Susan H, Lee H, Carol C, Will B, Sam B, Em B, Micheal B, Austin B, Virginia B, Mike Day, Dave L, James T, Dad, and many others. Have a great summer and see you on the snow!

It's getting a bit thin on the lower mountain. St Moritz and Mambo are barely holding in there with narrow connections. Broadway's bare spot has grown, but still has plenty of room most of the way. The best skiing is up top on Climax where the bumps are big and forgiving. Cornice Bowl and the Face of Three have groomed strips, but very little off-piste worth doing, as the suncups are blooming. Upper Dry is smoother, but the snow is a bit dirty and sticky. Wes Bowl's rutline is till a narrow strip of perfection surrounded by cuppy snow, and one easier bump line.

Some of the best skiing anywhere is found on 14,162 foot Mt. Shasta, a massive stratovolcano about seven hours north of Mammoth. Preston is doing the beach thing in the Bahamas, so it was just Cara and I. After spending Saturday night in Reno, we drove four hours to the Bunny Flat trail head at almost 7,000'. The Cascades get tons of snow, and there was still about four feet of it at the parking lot. From the car, it was a quick 2 mile skin with a 1000' of elevation gain to our base camp at Horse Camp. The spring was not running, but the bathrooms were open, and with Shasta's strict pack-out rules, that's important. Monday we climbed up the Giddy Giddy Gullies and dropped into Hidden Valley before heading up the West Face. We only skinned to about 11,000, but the corn was awesome, and the rolling terrain endless. A quick bootpack earned a nice descent down Giddy Giddy, before the snow became mushy suncups. Tuesday was similar with a nice skin up Avalanche Gulch and past Lake Helen at 10,400'. We didn't go very high past the lake, but still had some very sweet turns for about 2,000' followed by some very tiring sticky mush that got more sun-cupped just above camp. Monday we broke camp, and skied mushy suncups back to the car. It was a great trip, and we can't wait to go again next spring.

Went up for a few nice top laps this morning. The snow was soft early, and I stayed mostly on Dropout. The top was nice with easy round bumps, but the lower sections were pretty rough, and sticky.

Even with the warm temps, it was a great weekend of skiing. Saturday was all about steeps, with lots of laps on Daves's, Scotty's, Dropout and the Hump, followed by some rutline bumpin' in Wes Bowl. Sunday and Monday were more of the same, with lots of laps in the rutline.
