Fish Report for Thursday July 29th, 2010
| Bridgeport Reservoir: | Bridgeport Reservoir is fishing well. Jeff Walker at the Marina is keeping us in the loop about the angling action. Buckeye Bay and Rainbow Point seem to be the two places of greatest concentration, still. Nothing wrong with that. Fly anglers The fly action is excellent right now! Midges, PT's, and Damsels seem to be the ticket. Zebra and Blood Midges can't be left alone by curious trout. Spin & bait anglers Nightcrawlers and Powerbait (Flourescent Red, Yellow, Garlic) are great for the bait anglers. Trollers working Needlefish, Taz Devils, and Woolly Buggers are getting strikes. You'll want only 2 colors out on your lead core line, as otherwise you'll be dragging through the weeds.
| | Convict Lake: | Convict Lake keeps getting HEAVILY stocked with DFG and Alpers trout. It is definitely one of the strongest fishing lakes in the Eastside now. Bait anglers fishing from the beach on the south end are doing very well... they are taking a bit of everything... worms, Powerbait, lures, you name it. Working the Inlet on the far end if you have a boat is also going well. Anything in between also. Fly anglers Most reports coming from Convict are bait/spin-oriented, but you could do well to strip some streamers in Convict. Hot spots are the end where the inlet is, as well as the North Shore. Black or Green Buggers, and Olive Matukas should produce strikes. Hornbergs also. Mosquitoes or Yellow Stimis from the surface. Spin & bait anglers Garlic Powerbait and Inflated Nightcrawlers are all you'll need per bait. Trolling with the one and only quinessential Red and Gold Thomas Bouyant is working well. We like the Brown Trout pattern on this lake also, as well as the Perch pattern. Super Dupers and Kastmaster will work from the shore.
| | Crowley Lake: | Crowley Lake is fishing well. It is holding pretty consistent now, and is turning on as summer lengthens. Bait season is over on July 31... it is barbless fly and lures after that. If you're up for a good day with a great guy, call our shop for a trip with trolling specialist Don Meier. 760.934.7566. Fly anglers McGee is the hot spot now, with Hilton running in a strong second place. Fishing around 10 - 11 feet of water seems to be the most productive. Doubling up your flies with black or red midge patterns are getting hits. PT's, surprisingly enough, are working well also. If you are kicking around Hilton on the tube, strip your Krystal Flash Buggers (Olive or Brown) or Matukas or Leeches. Either will get hits. Spin & bait anglers Bait angling closes on the lake on July 31. That said, if you are fishing before end of bait season, we are hearing nothing but good reports about Inflated Nightcrawlers in McGee. Worms are working all over the Eastern Sierra now... no surprise there. Per spin angling, you've got to pinch the barbs down on August 1, but can still troll all you want. Trout are in the deeper waters. Fish 35 - 40 feet of water with lures around 10 feet above that. Rapalas in F9 and F11: Rainbow, Brook, and Purpledescent patterns. Needlefish in Frog and Bikini patterns. If you are fishing from the shore, flick some Kastmasters. They are a lot of fun to fling. Perch fishing Troll outside the weed beds in 15 - 20 feet of water. Punk Perch, Leeches, Olive Flash Buggers. Crank Baits, Jigs, Crappies, Small Rapalas... all heavy duty material for taking home pounds and pounds of "Crowley Chicken."
| | East Walker River: | East Walker River... The good news? Flows are down around 260 at the time of this report making it great fun to fish. That bad news? Half of Southern California is going to want to share the river with you. Yep, it's trout warfare season on the East Walker right now. But, there are moments of downtime when you can be lucky enough to have a hole or two to yourself. Also, don't overlook Robinson Creek if you are in Northern Mono County. It's a FUN little fishery!!! Fly anglers Caddis and Terrestrials are working on the surface. Big ol' Mayfly patterns also. Your standard nymph patterns for the East Walker will get hits: Micro Midges, Prince Nymphs, San Juans, etc. Best dry fly action tends to be around 2 - 4 in the afternoon, while stripping streamers in the evening is golden! Conehead Buggers, Flash Buggers, Leeches, Punk Perch... all good options. Spin & bait anglers Pinch the barbs off Orange Stingers and Trout Teasers and work them throughout the off sections of "The Glory Hole." Yo-Zuris, Small Rapalas, and Panther Martins will also get hits.
| | Grant Lake: | Grant Lake is fishing decent where Rush flows into it. Fly anglers Black Gnats in the evening if you're going after the Kamloops. Otherwise, sink line and streamers. Green Flash Krystal Bugger. Spin & bait anglers Gulp and Powerbait work very well on Grant. Go with Rainbow, Sherbert, or Rainbow Candy. Dunking Nightcrawlers on Grant is a good choice. For lures, trolling with lunker Rapalas and Needlefish are going to get huge hits.
| | Gull Lake: | Gull Lake tends to be the most productive in The Loop. Inflated Nightcrawlers will get big fish out of Gull: Alpers, Browns, and DFG Rainbows. Fishing the beach, or Indian Rock are good spots. Fly anglers Try stripping streamers around the cabin docks or off the marina. Olive Matukas and Buggers with a full sink line. Tie a PT 18-inches behind your streamers, the trout will take the trailing nymph. Spin & bait anglers Bait anglers are nailing trout on Gull right now... inflated nightcrawlers, Yellow and Chunky Cheese Powerbaits, Salmon Peach Powerbait... all good stuff. Get your goods about 4 or 5 feet off the bottom. Trolling with 2 to 3 colors out with Thomas Bouyants, Lip Ripperz, Bloody Rippers, Mirashads, and Needlefish are getting hits. Blue, Gold, and/or Pink Color Patterns seem to be the colors of choice for trout. Try around Indian Rock.
| | Hot Creek: | Hot Creek is more or less fishing like shooting them in a barrel... that is, if your fly selection is in the right ballpark and your drift is nothing less than picture perfect. The trout are really into the middle of the summer feeding frenzy and it's A LOT of fun to spend a half a day on down there. It is definitely in its element right now. Fly anglers Caddis Emergers are getting numerous strikes. Surface Emergers, Hot Creek Caddis, EC Caddis, Elk Hairs, Callibaetis Cripples... all good dries. Trico Duns in the morning are also getting grabs. Your drift is important. You can still fish 5X but you'll need to be willing to drop down to 6X soon, or to catch the monster trout who's already seen it all. Drift is everything on Hot Creek this time of year, as it's fished heavily. Per your wet flies, Z-Wing Caddis, Caddis Larva, Sparkle Pupa, 3-wire Caddis, WD-40's, Copper Johns... all good stuff. Cream and Green colors for any of these should get hits. Black and red as well.
| | June Lake: | June Lake is fishing very well. Getting at the trout in the reeds near the marina is a great way to get into plenty of bent rods. Fly anglers Stripping streamers through the reeds near the marina is a good choice. Buggers and Matukas. Orange and Green. Flash Buggers will work also. Spin & bait anglers Trollers will have hook ups with Tasmanian Devils and Needlefish. Fire Tiger and Silver/ Orange. Fish are a bit more off the bottom, so having about 2 colors out should be fine. Dunking worms dipped in garlic are also clearly going to bend rods.
| | Lake George: | Lake George is a local's favorite. Getting into the lunkers around the far side next to the big rock is a great way to pass some time and land plenty of trout. Fly anglers Standard Eastern Sierra dry flies: Callibaetis Cripples, Yellow Stimis, Parachute Adams, California Mosquitos. Stripping streamers with Matukas, Grey Ghosts, and Woolly Buggers will get hits. You'll want your intermediate or full sink line for the deep bug fishing. Spin & bait anglers Casting Inflated Nightcrawlers into George is your best bet. Kastmasters is not a bad idea for shore fishing with lures: Orange, or Silver/Blue. Trolling with Rapalas is a good option.
| | Lake Mamie: | Lake Mamie is a very user friendly little fishery. It is compact but full of fish. Pretty fun angling up there. Fly anglers Yellow Stimis and Parachute Adams for surface flies. Stripping Orange or Brown Flash Buggers on the floattube (though it will be cold) will work. Spin & bait anglers American Pie Powerbait is the dough of choice for Mamie. Definitely Nightcrawler friendly. Thomas Bouyants in Brown Trout and Red are good lures. Needlefish and Taz Devils will also get trout for the trollers on the float tubes.
| | Lake Mary: | Lake Mary is still our pick for the lakes basin!!! It is fishing very, very well! DFG is keep its waters chalk full of trout, and anglers coming into the shop have nothing but positive reports to share per Lake Mary. It's really the place to be to pitch worms right now, as you can't go wrong. Just remember to have your 2 lb test on with a bit of drag. 4 lb test tends to shy away wary trout. Play the game right, and you will be aptly rewarded! Fly anglers Same good flies for Mamie will work for Mary. You'll also want to try pitching a Callibaetis Cripple. Spin & bait anglers Your best bet without doubt is Inflated Nightcrawlers. We are seeing lots of happy smiles come into our shop to share with our friendly staff the success of worms at Mary. It's good stuff. Garlic Powerbait will also fill stringers. Per trolling, the one and only Red and Gold Thomas Bouyants will work wonders. Red Dot Frog should get strikes also. Rooster Tails from the shore can be productive at Mary.
| | Lee Vining Creek: | Lee Vining Creek your best bet if you are in Lee Vining for the day. Not a bad place to fish coming into or leaving Yosemite National Park. Fly anglers Working PT's and Zug Bugs through currents under a San Juan Worm will work well. Spin & bait anglers Salmon Eggs and Powerbait will get plenty of hits in Lee Vining Creek. Trout Teasers if you are tossing jigs and running them across currents.
| | Lower Owens River: | Lower Owens River is hotter than Hades and flowing heavier than the Mississippi. Go the distance, and over the Sherwin Grade up to the Upper Owens to fish if you need to hit the Owens now. Otherwise, lather up 70spf sunscreen, and expect a day of casting without any bent rods. Trust us. It's a great place every other season of the year.
| | Mammoth Creek: | Mammoth Creek is receiving good fishing reports. DFG is putting a lot of fish in it. We commend them for keeping the creek in town full of trout. Productive spots tend to me around Hayden's Museum, Old Mammoth Road, and just east of the 395 out of town. DFG dumps their fish just east of the 395. If you want to go somewhere close to town without much of a challenge, this would be the place. Fly anglers Parachute Adams, Madam-X's, and Mosquito Patterns are great flies. Griffith Gnats will also get hits. For the subsurface action, standard nymphs like PT's, Hare's Ear's, and Zug Bug's should do fine. Spin & bait anglers All flavors of Powerbait is really the way to go, as you'll want that dough bait to stay on your size 16/18 treble hook. Sherbert, Yellow, Flourescent Red, Flourescent Orange, Garlic... all good options.
| | Owens River (Benton Crossing Down): | The Upper O below the bridge is fishing very well. Note that the regs change below the one and only fishing monument on August 1 (same as Crowley... barbless and no bait). There are some bigger trout spread out about it. DFG keeps stocking it regularly also. The mosquitoes are also on the move on the Upper O, so bring your bug dope. Fly anglers PT's and Hare's Ears are getting hits. Copper Johns. Madam-X's, Elk Hair Caddis, Parachute Adams... the usual suspects. Spin & bait anglers Worms will do you fine. Buttercup Yellow or Grassy Green Gulp! is working. Trout Teasers in Roe/ Golden Nugget, or Green/Clear Red. Crappie Jigs are also great for the O.
| | Owens River (Benton Crossing Up): | The Upper O above the bridge is fishing really, really well. It keeps getting stocked (please report poachers if you find any there), and the angling is very, very good! There are lots of trout throughout all the bends up and down the waters. Fly anglers Strip some basic streamers through the pools, Buggers and Krystal Flash Buggers. Green or Black. Same fly patterns that will work below the bridge (see above) will also work in this section of the river. Spin anglers Rooster Tails and Panther Martins worked through deep currents tend to land trout. Jig patterns like Trout Teasers are also gonna get hits! Just be sure to pinch down your barbs!!!
| | Rock Creek: | Rock Creek has been very well stocked, particularly around Tuffs Campground on the east side of 395. DFG is putting in trout all along the creek on the west stretch also as you ascend up into the mountains. And... yes, anglers... Alpers trout ARE in Rock Creek! The grasshoppers and terrestrials are turned on big for the fly anglers. Lots of good angling going on right now. Fly anglers We are into the season of terrestrials are Rock Creek. Black Ants, Parachute Ants, Cow Killer Ants, Hoppers... all good stuff. Mosquitoes, Sierra Brite Dots, Royal Wulffs, Royal Trudes... also good choices. PT's if you are working subsurface, flashback is your best bet. Spin & bait anglers Trout Teasers are working really well. Fight-N-Frog, Green, Green and Brown. Per the bait anglers, Gulp! 'em! Get at 'em with American Pie or Rainbow Candy. Crickets will also work on Rock Creek.
| | Rock Creek Lake: | Rock Creek Lake keeps getting load after load after load of trout being stocked into it... and happy anglers taking out anything from pan-sized stockers to lugger Alpers. We are hearing great reports at the lake, and for the trekkers going above to Mosquito Flats, it's great fun. Phil at the world-famous "Pie in the Sky" Resort has us filled in on what's working for you anglers! Fly anglers In the lake, we are told that stripping streamers is your best bet right now. Namely Black Woolly Buggers and Olive Matukas. You should do fine with either of these. If they are surface feeding, try Parachute Adams or Mosquitoes. Spin & bait anglers Inflated Nightcrawlers are knocking 'em dead on the lake now! Make sure to get some air in them, and use your 2 lb. test. Per lures, Thomas Bouyants are the ones of choice. "Anything gold," Phil tells us. Gold, Gold with Red, or, if you're not into gold, the Pink Bubblegum (with the super cool lightning bolt in it!) are all working. Needlefish shall work also. Best locations are off the dock and the northwest side of the lake.
| | Rush Creek: | Rush Creek fishing conditions are good. We keep hearing success stories of happy anglers on Rush. Best spot, predictably enough, seems to be where the creek flows into Grant Lake. Fly anglers Streamer action where Rush flows into Grant, and the section above it is productive. Egg Sucking Leeches, Woolly Buggers, Kyrstal Flash Buggers... all good stuff. Run your streamers across currents, or cast into Grant and retrieve. For nymphs, Flash PT's, Glo-Bugs, Hare's Ears, and Copper Johns. Spin & bait anglers Panther Martins are great lures for Rush. Mepps also. Bait Anglers will whack em on Chunky Cheese, Chartreuse, Rainbow, and American Pie Powerbait.
| | Saddlebag Lake: | Saddlebag Lake is open to angling. Definitely a jewel of the Eastside. Worth heading to for half a day. Some great trekking around it also, come into our great shop to talk about some of your options for getting into the backcountry above Saddlebag. Some of the smaller fisheries above it also have some beautiful brookies in it. Fly anglers Stripping Eastside-style streamers will get hits: Buggers, Flash Buggers, Grey Ghosts, etc. Use your sink line. Parachute Adams and Callibaetis Cripples for the surface flies. Spin & bait anglers Trollers working Rooster Tails, Thomas Bouyants, and Taz Devils will get into trout. Nightcrawlers for the bait anglers.
| | San Joaquin River: | San Joaquin River is fishing well. Good around the meadows, but, as usual, getting off the beaten path with a sturdy pair of good hiking boots (we carry plenty of great brands) will get you into some good wild trout fishing. Fly anglers Sierra Brite Dots, Royal Wulffs, Royal Trudes, Mosquitoes, Parachute Adams... all good dries. For the subsurface action, Flashback PT's are about as sound a choice as any. Spin & bait anglers Bait anglers dunking Salmon Eggs or Powerbait will do fine. Sherbert, Yellow, Garlic, and Rainbow are working well. Trout Teasers are good little jigs for smaller rivers like the San Joaquin.
| | Silver Lake: | Silver Lake is fishing well. Getting into a good breakfast of biscuits and gravy at the Silver Lake Resort, then kicking the float tube on the far side is a great way to pass the morning hours. Fly anglers Troll to the far side with a BH Olive Matuka. That's really the one and only bug you'll need for Silver, of course, you can also use Buggers and G's-catchem-alls. If they are surface feeding, Parachute Adams, California Mosquitos, Yellow Stimis, and Callibaetis Cripples will get hits. Spin & bait anglers The most productive angling will be trolling w/ Thomas Bouyants. The Red/Yellow pattern is a good choice for Silver. Needlefish will also get grabs. Go with silver, or silver and orange. Nightcrawlers will also get trout, as will Powerworms -- Red.
| | Sotcher Lake: | Sotcher Lake is a great place to float tube. It is small and in a beautiful setting. Lots of trout in its waters. Fly anglers Stripping streamers on a sink line is a good way to go. Krystal Flash Buggers (Olive/Black) will get trout. We've also got plenty of Sierra Drifter streamers (and other flies) in our shop that will work well on Sotcher, and other stillwater fisheries. For surface action, Parachute Adams and Yellow Stimulators when they are surface feeding. Spin & bait anglers If you are trolling with the tube, Panther Martins, Rooster Tails, and Mepps will work well. Nightcrawlers are as good a bait choice as any on Sotcher.
| | Twin Lakes (Bridgeport Area): | Twin Lakes is notorious for holding some of the largest trout to be caught in the Eastside. It is not uncommon for a couple of 20-plus pound trout to be hooked in Twin. Trollers and fly anglers working the deeper waters will get into the larger lurking trout. Fly anglers Stripping really big streamers is your best option. G's-catchem-alls, Woolly Buggers, Flash Buggers, Matukas... all with your full sink line. Spin & bait anglers Troll with about 3 to 4 colors out. Get your large Rapalas and Yo-Zuris for the larger trout. Shore anglers tossing Inflated Nightcrawlers will get hits. Powerbait, of course, will also work.
| | Twin Lakes (Mammoth Basin): | Twin Lakes is fishing a bit slower than the others in the basin, but it is not to be overlooked. There are definitely trout in its waters, and spending a couple hours on Upper Twin next to the waterfall can be quite the zen experience of ultimate relaxation. Fly anglers Stripping Olive and Purple Krystal Flash Buggers where you can should get hits. One of our favorite ways to fish Twin is with Black Gnats near the waterfall in the evening. This can be a lot of fun. Spin & bait anglers Inflated Nightcrawlers dipped in garlic work well at Twin. Rainbow Sherbert and American Pie Powerbait are excellent. Thomas Bouyants (Red/ Rainbow/ Brown Trout) are good lures. Mepps and Panther Martins also.
| | Virginia Lakes: | Virginia Lakes is fishing excellent now! Carolyn Webb who runs the resort keeps us in the loop on what's working. She is a sweetheart and makes a gold medal apple pie. Stop in her shop for a slice of pie, a cup of java, and a conversation of what's the immediate best spot on the lakes to fish. Fly anglers Olive Leeches, Olive Flash Buggers, Small Emerger Patterns, Yellow Sallies, Mosquitoes. Spin & bait anglers Nightcrawlers, Crickets, and Orange Powerbait for the dunkers. As for lures, the Red and Silver Kastmaster, Red and Gold Thomas Bouyant, and Silver TB's are working well.
